Vickie is a Qualified Supervisor in the state of Florida for those working towards their hours to become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor.
Vickie is also a Registered Counselor Supervisor for those working towards licensure as a counselor in Idaho.
Supervision allows you to expand on your knowledge and experience that you gained while in graduate school. It assists you in navigating becoming a fully independent counselor, while having additional support and guidance. Supervision helps you grow confidence in your skillset and also reinforces providing quality care to your clients.
In addition to supervision being a requirement for licensure, having a supervisor who you can rely on and accurately consult with is crucial during the licensure process. We would love to work with you and help you grow your skills as a counselor. Yes. Vickie is a Qualified Supervisor for Registered Mental Health Counseling Interns (RMHCI) in the State of Florida and a Registered Counselor Supervisor for those working towards licensure as a counselor in Idaho.
No. Qualified supervision is a consistent relationship between the supervisor and supervisee where the supervisor provides ongoing oversight of a registered intern working towards state required licensure hours. Qualified supervisors must be approved by the State of Florida and the relationship between supervisor and supervisee is recorded with the state prior to supervision beginning. Consultation on the other hand is not required but is often encouraged. While registered interns may seek consultation in addition to their qualified supervision, consultation can also be sought by professionals that are already licensed. Consultation does not count for qualified supervision hours. Engaging in one or multiple consultation sessions does not make the consultant your qualified supervisor.
Unfortunately no. Due to potential ethical issues involving dual relationships, we do not recommend having your supervisor and your therapist being the same person.
This depends. If I am currently working with enough supervisees that are wanting to do group supervision in addition to individual supervision then yes group supervision is offered.
I purposely choose to not supervise too many interns at the same time. Each state can also have limits on how many people a supervisor can supervise. Idaho, as an example, specifies a limit of 6. The exact number is flexible dependent upon the amount of other responsibilities including my own clients, trainings, etc. The reason for this is that I believe great supervision takes a lot of effort on the part of the supervisee and the supervisor, so I want to make sure I have the appropriate time and energy to put forth into providing the best supervision experience possible. Supervision is a multi-year relationship (dependent upon other circumstances of course) so when I consider whether or not to supervise someone I try to foresee that I am able to at the full capacity for those multiple years.
Absolutely! I encourage it! Considering the significance and importance of supervision in your licensure process you should be interviewing the supervisor to make sure they are the right fit for you. During our interview I will also be asking you questions to make sure that I'm able to assist you in what you are looking for. If we both decide to move forward with supervision, I make sure several times throughout the full supervision process to check and make sure you are feeling like you are satisfied with the supervision and that I'm still an appropriate fit.
It is generally my recommendation that your supervisor be someone outside of the agency you work for. While this may not be financially possible for all, if you are able to financially manage it I recommend an outside supervisor. This is because that agency supervisor is employed by that agency they may unknowingly, or worse knowingly, be providing supervision that is more based on what is beneficial for the company rather than on what is actual best practice and what is best for you and your clients. While this is not an accurate depiction of all supervisors who work for agencies, it does reflect some. This is why interviewing is so important. Another benefit could also be having the perspective of someone who isn't involved with your company and may have different ideas and suggestions to help you grow your skills. An additional benefit is if you are not planning to stay with a particular agency for long or other circumstances occur that cause you to leave it is sometimes easier to have an outside qualified supervisor because they can "travel with you" so to speak.
